I sat there with you the last two years at the CoSIDA convention. Looking through the manual and finding something I hoped would be interesting and helpful at the Photoshop Tips and Tricks session. And, I saw the looks on many of your faces as the panelists, who are extremely talented at what they do, went extremely in-depth on advanced tips to make promotional posters and brands for big-time college sports departments.
It felt like a session for 10 percent of the audience or less. And, for that 10 percent, extremely valuable and solid content. But, you’re an SID, your time is valuable, and you may barely be able to navigate around the tool bar in Photoshop much less a 200 layer campaign poster. You may not need to know how to put together an entire promotional campaign on your own for a football season. Heck, you may just need to know how to cut out a player or apply a drop shadow.
That’s what Do It Yourself Graphics Tutorials for SIDs aims for. As I begin to do this, I’ll need your feedback. What do you want to learn? What would you like to do better?
My plan, is to first, do a tutorial on how to set up a final score graphic template for your upcoming season. A Photoshop file that you can edit on the fly so you can have final score graphics for your seasons. In between you will learn tips and tricks that you can apply to other graphics.
Then, we’ll move on to things that you tell me you need to learn how to do. It may be a whole tutorial on cutouts, or drop shadows, or gradients. You make the call. But, the theme that will carry through, is things to make you more efficient. Because some of you juggle 19 sports by yourself (been there, done that) and don’t have time for “perfect” cutouts – you just need something functional that won’t embarrass your brand.
I hope this will be a valuable tool for SIDs, and selfishly will draw attention to SIDesign and what we can do for your college athletic department if you don’t have that valuable time to create and be creative.
